Mehmet Ali Birand : Good morning , this is Mehmet Ali Birand , bringing you some very alarming news.Can you hear me out there? If you can , it may not be for long.According to the latest statistics on noise pollution , the noise in the large urban centres is reaching a level which is seriously damaging our heading.
Noise , as you know , is measured in decibels.A noise of one dec,bel is the least the human ear can detect Noises exceeding 85 or 90 decibels are considered in the dangerous range .Just think of it , young people play and listen to rock music amplifield to a thunderous 114 decibels ! While a jet plane taking off produces a noise of 150 decibels , only 10 decibels more can couse total deafness !
But are people aware of these dangers ? We asked our Istanbul correspondent , Fatih Portakal , to carry out an on the spot survey.
Fatih : Good morning , this is Fatih Portakal.Istanbul is , of course , one of the world's most popular cities for tourists.But they come to what is already a very crowded city where sometimes you can hardly hear yourself think !
Fatih : We're doing this hting about noise pollution here in Istanbul .Does it bother you...the level of noise here ?
Woman : It's terrible.Much worse once you've had a baby.You're
Fatih : Does it bother you for the baby ?
Woman : I think he's in shock !
Fatih : Does the noise level here bother you ?
Woman : Very much !
Fatih : Do you live in Istanbul ?
Woman : No , I work in Istanbul .
Fatih : Do you have to put up with this every day ?
Woman : Absoluteyl.
Fatih : Do you find it tiring ?
Woman : At this time of the day , yes ..I'm really tired.It really takes it out of you.
Man : There's hte tooting and the beeping and the swearing .The underground and the overground...the planes up above.It's a nightmare !
Fatih : Does it bother you ? The noise ?
Girl : No .
Fatih : Do you live in Istanbul ?
Boy : Yes.
Fatih : Does it brother you ... the noise ?
Boy: Not , not at all
Fatih : That soothing noise ofwater from the fountain is about the only natural sond you ' re going to hear in Istanbul's Sultan Ahmet Square.But with all the other manmade sounds around , the decibel level here reaches 85 which is not far from the danger level for your hearing !
